About Us'The Birkbeck Singers' is one of the very popular courses Institute members can select to join. We meet most Wednesday mornings, 10 until 12, at the Ipswich Institute for 3 terms throughout the year with our own regular piano accompanist .
We sing for fun and enjoy learning together. There's a social side as well, supporting and fund-raising for a different charity each year with activities and functions outside of the weekly singing sessions. New members are always welcomed without audition and there is no requirement to be able to sight-read music (although it does help!), in fact, the only prerequisites are that you love to sing, and that you wish to celebrate song with our choir. Our aim is to make the best sound that we can when we sing, enjoy sharing our music within the group and in the wider community and over time increase our own musical understanding and performance skills. The music styles covered by the group are varied; Musical Theatre, Rock, Pop, Swing, Folk, Sea Shanties, Film Music, Gospel. There’s not much we won’t tackle, and the group thrives on variety in its singing. We generally perform 2 or 3 concerts throughout the year - a Christmas Carol concert, biannually, a concert at the Ipswich Music Day in the summer, as well as concerts for charities, care-homes, etc. We have also ventured very recently, to present two very successful complete shows for the general public under our own banner. |
