How we began
On 19th January 2011 the Ipswich Institute added 'singing' to their growing repertoire of study classes and a music tutor was appointed to lead the group. 15 people tentatively signed up. Numbers increased so much so that a few months later a regular pianist was appointed. As confidence grew and musical expectations became more adventurous the group were encouraged to undertake public performances for small audiences. It was then that members voted to adopt the name ‘The Birkbeck Singers’ (from the name of their regular practice place ‘the Birkbeck Room’ ), and subsequently developed their own logo.
Where we are now
'The Birkbeck Singers' remains a very popular group Ipswich Institute members can select to join.
We sing for fun and enjoy learning together. Our aim is to make the best sound that we can when we sing, enjoy sharing our music within the group and in the wider community and over time increase our own musical understanding and performance skills. There's a social side as well, supporting and fund-raising for a different charity each year with activities and functions outside of the weekly singing sessions.
The music styles covered by the group are varied; Musical Theatre, Rock, Pop, Swing, Folk, Sea Shanties, Film Music, Gospel. There’s not much we won’t tackle, and the group thrives on variety in its singing.
This is a mixed choir, and new members are always welcomed. You will be required to join the Ipswich Institute, which in itself has many benefits, However, no audition is required and there is no requirement to be able to sight-read music, although it can help. In fact, the only prerequisites are that you love to sing, and that you wish to celebrate song with our choir.
We meet on Wednesday mornings, during school term times, at the Ipswich Institute from10.00 until 12.00.

Our Charities
Through our events we choose to fundraise each year for a particular charity. Since the choir has been in existence we have supported a wide range of both local and national charities. These have included the St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich Food Bank (FIND), Iceni, Cruse, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Suffolk Dyslexia, the Back Up Trust, ActivLives and Talitha Koum.
For 2024 we have elected to support the charity Papyrus for a second year. This is a charity which is dedicated to the prevention of young suicide, and a charity that is close to our hearts.
