Our Summer Celebration Concert
We started our 2024 season under the lead of our new Musical Director, Lindsay Blay, following Chandra's retirement. We spent the next few months getting to know each other and learning and rehearsing some new pieces of music. This culminated in A Summer Celebration Concert on the 8th July 2024 at St Peter's on the Waterfront.
Our 2024 summer concert was a great success. To start with we all thoroughly enjoyed performing and in addition we received some excellent and positive feedback from many members of the audience. To top it all, we also raised £348.00 from the raffle and donations for our chosen charity, Papyrus. The concert was extremely well supported and resulted in a much larger audience attending than had been anticipated, for which we were very grateful.
Unfortunately the oboist Angela Blay was unwell so was unable to perform for us, but instead Lindsay's husband Richard Blay played us two beautiful Scottish tunes on his accordion and Lindsay sang a wonderful solo which was a real treat. Otherwise the programme was as above, described as an eclectic mix of light classical, film and popular melodies, a lovely mix of songs we enjoyed singing.
A huge "thank you" must go to Lindsay, for the song choices and direction she has given us, and to Sabine for her wonderful accompaniment throughout. Thanks must also go to Richard for 'stepping in' and providing our audience with an extra, but delightful, musical interlude.

Our Summer Walk
On Wednesday July 24th 2024 thirteen of us, which included some of The Birkbeck Singers and their partners, met up in Martlesham for a walk in an area called the Martlesham Wilds, an area now managed by the RSPB, which is undergoing a natural wilding process after being used as an organic farm for many years.
The walk was arranged and led by Frances. We had fantastic weather, took a fairly leisurely pace, in great company and surrounded by nature.
As we walked beside the river a variety of birds were observed including black tailed godwits, mute swans, lapwing, oyster catchers and little egrets.
Some comments made afterwards:
“A very big thank you to Francis for a really lovely walk today. Enjoyed it. Lots of wild flowers, butterflies, and river / creek views.” (Helen)
“…a lovely walk, great company, ... Let’s do it again. Thank you, Frances.” (Margaret N.)
“It was well planned, just the right length, and … perfect weather. Great company too.” (Barbara)
At the end of the walk those of the group who were able to met at The Cherry Tree in Woodbridge for lunch, which reportedly served “fabulous food”. (MN)
Not only was this a really enjoyable event but we also raised £80.00 for Papyrus!

Our Spring 2023 Celebration Concert.
What a concert we all had!
What a concert we all had!
A Spring Celebration
April 1st 2023 certainly wasn’t any “April Fool’s Day” for The Birkbeck Singers, but a day when they came together with “StrictlyCelli” at the Salvation Army Citadel, Woodbridge Road to make music and provide the audience with a wonderful concert to remember.
Although I was sad not to be able to participate this time it gave me the opportunity to be treated to hearing the Choir as a member of the audience – and what a treat it was!
The Choir was joined by guests “StrictlyCelli” who are a group of 10 extremely talented cellists who set the hall ablaze with layers of sounds made from the tonal range of the cellos. They played a selection of songs ranging from Bach to the present day and were just brilliant and kept the audience enraptured.
The concert was in aid of the deserving charity “Papyrus” (Prevention of Young Suicide) which encourages the promotion of positive mental health and emotional well being in young people. A gentleman from the Charity spoke about his personal experience and the good work that they do in schools and the wider community.
Interspersed with the songs the Choir sung John, Fred and Eileen gave interesting explanations of the song’s history. It wasn’t until Terry reminded us so well of the history of The Birkbeck Singers that everyone could appreciate how far we had come as a Choir since forming in 2011.
Thanks to the tremendous work of our musical director, Chandra, and accompanied by our pianist, Sabine, the rainbow of colours that the Choir wore and the rainbow of sound made really celebrated Spring and certainly left both the Choir and the audience with a “spring” in their tails and “full of the joys of Spring”.

Ipswich Music Day
|
I had the absolute pleasure of listening to The Birkbeck Singers, lead and conducted by Chandra Grover, performing at the Ipswich Music Day this weekend.
Looking like a rainbow on the stage in their colourful shirts, ‘The Rhythm of Life’ gave a pacy uplifting start, with layered harmonies throughout, followed by ‘The Skye Boat Song’ where floaty alto and soprano melodies soared effortlessly above the evocative baritone male voices. Then on to the ethereal, slow build up ‘Adiemus’, with the soloist and sopranos holding the main tune as unfamiliar words wove in through their melody. A beautiful piece indeed, and I think, my favourite of the afternoon. Suddenly we were transported back to the 70’s to enjoy Smokey Robinson’s hit ‘Tracks of my Tears’ and The Mamas and The Papas ‘California Dreaming’, before being whisked away to the Welsh Valleys by the lullaby ‘Suo Gan’. A moving and thought-provoking rendition of Ralph McTell’s ‘Streets of London’ was next, and then Enya’s beautiful song ‘May It Be’ brought the concert to a close. The audience was spellbound throughout, as I was, and I look forward to seeing the singers once again at their ‘Joy of Music@ concert at 2pm on July 21st at St Peters by the Waterfront. With thanks to KET a member of the audience |

December 2021
Who would have believed it ? It was back in February 2020, when the Birkbeck Singers supported Ron's bid for 'Talitha Koum' Hope Centre to be our charity for the coming year ...Then Covid 19 happened ! Social lives including singing and concerts, came to a juddering halt and any fund-raising possibilities were sorely challenged by social- distancing requirements ! Our options to raise money seemed non-existent, however John and Lin found a way ! They invited folks to back a '3 day Litter Picking Enterprise' and by donating to 'Talitha Koum' in support of John & Lin's clean-up efforts, they raised an amazing £443.00 !
Gloria brought some Christmas spirit to the 2021 final rehearsal. Once again she had created some stunning flower presentations, giving us pleasure along with an opportunity to raise some more funds with 3 beautiful floral basket displays for a raffle and also some smaller very pretty arrangements for members to buy .
Ron, our current Charity leader, was pleased to receive from Jill Dean, Director of Talitha Koum , a letter of gratitude and appreciation for the £1251.00 which the Birbeck Singers had raised for the cause. He reminded folks to take pride that they had maintained their support through out such a challenging time.

The Birkbeck Singers were eager to get back into ‘choir mode’, albeit with a smaller group for whom ‘choral’ singing had not been on their agenda for some time. For the next two months under the guidance of our enthusiastic MD and Roy’s fantastic piano accompaniments, everyone’s energy focused on readiness for the Christmas concert. Little time was wasted, certainly the early practices challenged our voices and our memories. Rehearsals were busy but always fun and highly productive. It wasn’t long before we were enjoying the familiar sounds and harmonies that are so magical when they happened. Over time, the hard work paid off and the growing song-list shaped up into an impressive musical programme.
By the 9th December all was ready, and the Birkbeck team was proud to present The Ipswich Arts Association’s Lunch time Christmas Concert 2021 to a very appreciative audience. |

Sunday 15th August Along the quiet country lanes of Suffolk
After a strict eighteen months in seriously restricted lock-down , Penny and daughter Natalie, were seen to be gearing up for their new ' FREEDOM TIME ' in style.
Look what my daughter Natalie got me to do yesterday.
I did it!! and once I got used to the speeds and tractors coming charging towards us it was fantastic. We started at these people's house in Beccles and went to Southwold along the country lanes. We had some weird looks and lots of smiles from people and I was good with my royal wave. We made it to 70 miles an hour !!! .....We were so lucky as the weather was just perfect. What a day! I certainly slept well last night !
The lady and gentleman who set up this charity (you can look it up at wishlistbikers.org ) to help sick and disabled children and adults were so lovely . He is a retired GP and they were so good with the two of us - we had every confidence in them. What an experience.

It was good to be back for this memorable occasion when so many of the Birkbeck Singers could be together again to sing - this time without masks ; a joy after 18 months of tight restrictions during the Covid pandemic lockdown.
Chandra booked a two hour session at St Peter' s, with a real piano and introduced us to 'Lisa', our pianist for the day ; what a luxury - technology free! . Chandra found many favourite titles from our repertoire for us to sing in harmony, maybe a little less confidently than before but
we did our best and it was so much fun. Mind you, in spite of the sheer pleasure of being able to sing with others , I , for one, will certainly have to work with the Alto teacher-tracks at home again, before the September sessions start again.
Thanks Chandra, another winning stroke!

Sunday 4th April 2021 After a year of Covid-19 - Reflections from David...
2020
What a strange year 2020 has been - "the year of interruption". The second lockdown was probably inevitable but it was something we all were hoping would never happen, and when it finally started on 5th November it hit everyone hard. The days were growing shorter, only essential shopping could be done, and all normal activities ground to a halt. Then winter weather set in, with freezing temperatures and snow on the ground.
Knowing that Chandra had booked a group of us for a singing session at St. Peter's on the day after this lockdown ended, on 3rd December, we were overjoyed to discover that this was able to go ahead, as long as we obeyed the Covid rules of social distancing for music rehearsal. So, full of delight and determination we turned up on a freezing wet morning with our face masks on to meet Chandra who showed us in turn to our seats. We were well spaced out, 3 metres apart from each other, but how uplifting it was just to be in "live" company with musical friends again. And of course St. Peter's has a good acoustic for singing, so we made the most of the chance to sing some of our favourites - One Voice, Go Tell It, Skye Boat Song and of course, Why We Sing. We had all parts covered, but special mention of Peter Wright, the lone tenor, for his very sound contribution!
And of course huge thanks to Chandra for arranging the session, and for making it happen despite the last minute hassles

This event was looked forward to, as we had not been able to sing together for many months. It did not disappoint!
The six singers chosen for this date took a while to warm up, as we were not used to singing in such a small group.
Chandra eased our way, however, by producing a tiny speaker, which played the accompaniment. The acoustics in
the huge stone space were completely different from those of our Birkbeck Room at Ipswich Institute.
After a rather shy beginning we gained in confidence, and produced a resonance of sound which reached the beamed
roof then flowed outwards and down.
This building was made for singing and rewarded us for our efforts. We exited in high spirits, hoping to return
for more. thanks Barbara

Local Litter Pick
Back in February, the Birkbeck Singers voted to support ‘Talitha Koum’ during 2020, however, in March our first ‘ Covid Lockdown’ happened and ‘stay at home, isolating and social distancing ‘ became the order of the day - not a bright prospect for a new charity project ! How could we support ‘Talitha Koum ‘ - John and Lin suggested a local ‘ Litter Pick ‘ each around their own home areas : Frances joined them but most felt that it was a brave idea in a pandemic but - ‘ it wasn’t for them’ ; however, they would like to send donations to the charity in support of Lin, John and Frances' wombling activities to raise funds for 'Talitha Koum'. |

24th September 2020
The Government announced that amateur choirs could now meet providing it was under a supervised and planned activity, with risk assessments and track and trace in place.
Like many other choirs , the Birkbeck Singers had been dependent for our weekly music ‘fix‘ via the virtual media of Zoom since March 2020 ! This latest Government pronouncement brought hope that normality might not be far .
‘It will certainly be good to get singing live again and to hear those harmonies close to us.’
Our MD, Chandra’s initial thoughts were to hold some trial sessions to see how they went. These would be in groups of 8 singers + herself : also aware of the increased threat Covid-19 was infections were transmitted through the air, so singing ‘a capella’ to keep everything at a moderate volume would be wise.
Chandra had cleared it with the Institute that the Singers would seek an alternative venue . Margaret, a choir member, made enquiries with St Peter’s Church by the Waterfront where she found the perfect solution. The church is a Covid Secure venue and provides space for the group to spread out at 3metres . Birkbeck’s own risk assessment and guidelines would be sent to all the singers in advance so that everyone knows what is expected of them. Possible venues were filling up fast so provisional dates were immediately agreed. All on Thursdays between 11a.m to 12 noon on 22nd October / 12th November /3rd December .
These sessions were open for all Birkbeck Singers but would need to be prebooked. To help Chandra with the planning and interest levels , she asked members which option they would take either ‘Yes please I’d love to come and sing’ or ‘No thank you it’s not for me at the moment’ : no one should feel uncomfortable declining the opportunity. She also confirmed that our regular Wednesday Zoom sessions would continue as planned .
What a result ! 20 intrepid singers signed up. Such excitement ‘singing with real people’ and for Chandra (sleepless nights I suspect) rafts of risk assessments, regulations, seating plans, balancing voices , selecting songs for the sessions - the list must have seemed endless but it did happen.

In the Autumn term of 2020 The Ipswich Arts Association hosted an online event 'Arts in Celebration'. Local musicians, bands, poets, artists and actors were invited to take part and so, keen to support this event and show off our many talents, the Birkbeck Singers sent in their video 'Why We Sing' by Greg Gilpin. "The video was a lovely project involving everyone who sent me their audio which they recorded in isolation at home. I then put the video together with photos of the choir showing singers past and present. We are very proud of this lasting legacy". Chandra explained as though her masterful technical skills were commonplace!
From the Singers, Sue Wallace-Shaddad and Margaret Nicholls enhanced the event with their poems and our MD Chandra displayed some of her art work (...she's a talented artist as well !)

Birkbeck Singers Zoomland
|
We were welcomed back by our smiling Music Director, Chandra. She had booked the weekly ZOOM meetings up until half-term (ever the eternal optimist hoping that Covid ’19 might have ‘petered’ out by then !)
She had prepared everything to guarantee the smooth continuity of musical enjoyment for the Birkbeck Singers and sent the details to everyone via our media ports ; - Dated Rehearsal plans with Song titles a) we would have the correct score ready and b) to ensure we could maintain the choir’s current repertoire ready for the future concerts, and music scores + their Mp3s for the new songs for the term. Chandra’s Teacher Tracks Mp3 have been a useful tool for learning new pieces in the privacy of home, and during this pandemic , it has been a life blood . During the two years with Birkbeck Singers, Chandra has recorded (with a friend or two) , produced and built up a useful library of Mp3 ( Sop/Alto/Ten/Bass/piano), which are an amazing aid for home learning , rehearsals and backing tracks for our zoom lessons .
So, this new normality returns .
A wonderful singing session and much appreciated ‘chat room’ break out .
Singing again!
Lockdown finished - 4th July 2020 - now we have Lift off!

It certainly hasn’t been an easy time for many of us but as we ease out of lockdown, we can start to enjoy the freedom and company of friends with ‘social distancing’ walks, kindly organised by Margaret Nicholls. SUMMER TERM ACTIVITY Our last session of term celebrated World Music Day with a tour to the 7 continents of the world. This was so entertaining and many of you enjoyed the variety of songs and interesting tales and facts. Thank you to our ‘tour guides’ for hosting. We were in safe hands and had a wonderful time. We were so touched by Stevie’s poem from the heart too. Thank you, Stevie, for sharing it with us. As well as revisiting our repertoire we’ve enjoyed singing along to the Beatles, the Carpenters and to the glorious Sounds of the Sixties. Our VE Day celebration was a highlight for me. I enjoy singing such familiar songs byour very own, sadly departed, Dame Vera Lynn. Why We Sing With some uncertainty you bravely pressed the ‘Record’ and the ‘Send’ buttons. Well done everyone as this is not an easy task. I am so immensely proud when I show my friends and family the video. It is a wonderful legacy of our time in lockdown and in case you have not seen it yet here is the link; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdX1VhLQwbI from Chandra x Look forward to seeing you Wednesday 9th September |

Rehearsal Lock-down but not Locked out!
Rehearsals one week and then cancelled the next was all rather surreal but it was official. The whole of the UK went into lock-down. Keen to keep the singing going the musical director's dilemma was how to transfer face to face to online sessions. But where there's a will....and we've all had to learn new IT skills! Since we've found our new online platform the singers have continued to meet every Wednesday morning and engaged in singing along to the Carpenters, the Beatles and celebrated VE Day on 8th May. "It is such a tonic to see everyone and it's good to keep singing. There's a lot of friendly banter and chatter too!" |
Zooming in Lockdown
In March 2020, our weekly choir practice came to an abrupt halt when Coronovirus came to visit us. Lockdown seemed so extreme as to be scarcely believable. However it wasn't long before our resourceful musical director Chandra was in touch with us with a suggestion about zoom meetings as a way of continuing our choir sessions.
It would be an understatement to say that I am not computer literate so it was with trepidation that I clicked hopefully on the correct links and amazingly, hey presto! There we all were waving our hellos! How I looked forward to those 'zoomings' on Wednesdays at 10 o'clock, how reassuring to be able to see and hear all those familiar faces lucky enough to be able to join in, sadly not everyone could. Thank you Chandra for enabling, and arranging this for us, it must have involved you in a lot of hard work. Reporter Eileen G |

A
Gift From The Birkbeck Singers To ActivLives (2018 - Dec 2019) |
It was a brilliant decision by the Birkbeck Singers to vote ‘ActivLives’ to be our charity focus for 2018, which later extended to December 2019. On cue, a few weeks later, Kath presented us with a homemade Simnel cake – the first raffle ticket book was opened; we were on our way! - Frances volunteered to look after the purse strings.
Delicious buns frequently appeared to tempt us to donate our coppers; Gloria’s stunning fresh flower presentations proved popularly lucrative whilst Penny’s advocacy encouraged members to join the ‘Adopt a Bee’ project, which added considerably to the funds. For our fundraising effort holiday activities were a boon, as well as good fun for the Birkbeckers. Eileen G. ran a delightful Arts & Crafts Workshop, all comers welcome – finding unexpected talent ! There were healthy outdoor options too. In August 2018, Stevie and Paul led a relaxed stroll in Waldringfield along the riverside and over the fields – a blissful day , offering plenty opportunity to catch up on holiday events and, of course, nattering continued over the excellent meal later at the Maybush. David also invited us to join him for a walk – this time in the Bramford area following a trail through greenery and trees revealing hidden beauty spots almost at every bend. This delightful morning finished with a glass and dinner at the Bramford Cock – Yes! Then there were two full capacity ‘Sing-Alongs’- the first one in May ’18, was in the glitzy night-club setting of the ‘The Rep’ with lights, a gallery and bar. The second was an ‘ Afternoon Cream Tea Party Sing-Along’ a smaller cosier venue ‘Chapters Restaurant’ on the hottest afternoon of 2019; when iced-water or coke became the default drink. There were further treats when Chandra and Pat played their clarinets in an Abba selection set – and later Chandra (our lauded MD) played air-guitar to the amusement of all! For both these shows our multi-talented Tim Laming led the event playing his guitar and singing ; the audience's engaged involvement turned both occasions into such fun! Essentially, the Birkbeck Singers are all about SINGING WELL and during fundraising we staged two major productions for a paying public audience:- ‘Swing’s the Thing’ (Produced by Be Bird) and ‘Winter Wonderland’ (Produced by Chandra Grover) Sadly, on the 25th June 2018 we learned that Be Bird had died suddenly, only two months after that performance, and only a week after we had hugged goodbye before the Summer break. After such news, in September the choir that returned were traumatized and apprehensive With a new Music Director appointed, we envisaged challenges ahead for Chandra Grover and we had concerns about how each other were going to cope with our awful sense of loss. We decided to ‘rest’ our charity commitment for a while. Chandra skilfully handled the situation, gradually restoring our positive attitude with a few new ideas and practices, but it wasn’t until April 2019 that we felt we could resume the fun things in aid of ActivLives. Chandra posed the idea of a Christmas Concert, possibly with another choir; this was well received – thus, the plans and rehearsals for our final healthy cash injection into ActivLives’ account went ahead; a collaborative project with the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir and the Birkbeck Singers for ‘A Winter Wonderland Concert’, once again under Chandra’s care ! It was a show to be proud of. So, we are delighted to present Julie Stokes (Managing Director of ActivLives) with a cheque for £3,641.45 to support the valuable work of this charity which helps, supports and encourages many lonely or isolated people, to actively enjoy and participate in their local community of Ipswich & District . Exciting times, looking forward with anticipation to what 2020 holds . Watch this space. With enormous thanks to all the above for all their hard work, good will and great company. It's been fun and an honour to be Charity Leader for 2018- to Dec 2020 Thanks folks - Mary Sp. x |

Thank you to Chandra Grover (MD Birkbeck Singers) and Carol Goates ( MD Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir) who had the original idea for this collaborative venture, along with the energy and know-how that was needed to make it happen.

Winter Wonderland
|
This year on Friday13th December, our Christmas Celebratory Concert was a bit different. Our Winter Wonderland evening was a 50/50 collaboration of two choirs, the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir and the Birkbeck Singers. Both groups equally shared responsibilities, costs, publicity, sales, performance and of course, the profits for their Charities ; these also were split 50/50; the Male Voice Choir nominated ‘Fresh Beginnings’ with their half, whilst the Birkbeck Singers named ActivLives for theirs.
Both choirs and the guest Flute Choir, thoroughly enjoyed performing and working together, the audience was keen to show their appreciation and pleasure thoughout the evening and both Charity CEOs were delighted to receive their additional funds for their very worthy causes. |
- What better way could there be to start yuletide festivities than by spending a delightful evening in the company of the Birkbeck Singers and the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir at their ‘Winter Wonderland’ concert?
Lifting the lid on a tempting selection box of beautifully arranged and sparkly festive favourites including Jingle Bells, Gaudete, O Holy Night, Away in a Manger, Silver Bells, A Winter’s Tale and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, it was a feast for the ears. With a sprinkling of musical fairy dust from the Ipswich Flute Choir making the most of the venue’s acoustics and with falling snowflake projections on the walls, we listened, reflected, smiled, laughed and occasionally sang along. Keeping with the spirit of the season, two charities, namely ‘ActivLives’ and ‘Fresh Start New Beginnings’ benefited from the proceeds, and mince pies and refreshments generously provided by The Ipswich Co-op added to the money raised. And afterwards, feeling suitably festive, we wandered away into the Ipswich night humming tunes and looking forward to a very happy and peaceful Christmas. Report from a member of the Audience ..... K.E.T |
If anyone has some photos with both the Birkbeck Singers and the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir together, maybe even with the falling snowflakes, please send them to the editor.

Summer Country Walk
|
David planned a wonderful circular cross-country route between the two villages of Bramford and Sproughton . It was the perfect distance and pace for a morning stroll, where almost every 5 minutes revealed something of interest ; flowers, trees, distant farms, glimpses of the River Gipping, a Renoiresque bridge and water mills, even the site of Sproughton's village Lock-up! ...a reminder to limit ourselves when we return to the Bramford Cock , at the end of the walk .
Reporter MS |
On the 21st August, ten of us met at the Bramford Cock pub for a walk organised by Birkbeck member, David Mitchell. It was a pleasant and sunny morning, and we walked about three and a half miles. We went along footpaths at the back of Bramford village towards Sproughton. Then we returned along the river bank to Bramford. This was a lovely and varied walk and a good chance to catch up with each others' news. Arriving back at the pub, we had a very enjoyable lunch. Good to see Stevie, who came to have a drink with us. This was a great way to raise funds for our charity. ActivLives. Thank you to David for organising this event for us. Secret Reporter MNld |
Afternoon Sing-Along Tea Party
|
What better way to spend the hottest afternoon of the year so far than singing along with the fabulous Tim Laming and friends at the Ipswich Institute Restaurant in aid of ActivLives?
With lyric booklets to hand, over 50 eager audience members joined in singing old favourites from artists including Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis Presley, The Hollies, Bob Dylan, The Carpenters and many others. Tim led the singing and played his guitar, accompanied by Peter ......... and .Paul.........on the ukulele. Halfway through the afternoon, Chandra Grover and Pat Grimwade gave Tim a well-earned break and delighted us with clarinets and a selection of Abba songs which got many of us waving our arms in the air as we sang along! As we sat around small tables with our friends, ate exquisite bite-sized cream cakes and pastries from china cakes stands and poured ourselves tea, coffee or iced water between the songs .........but time moves so quickly on when your having fun. With a brief cheery word from Julie Stokes ,the MD of ActivLives, the nominated charity, and huge applause and thanks to the musicians and sound technicians Fern Teather and Sam Thurlow , and , of course to Angie, the Restaurant manager, who had done so much to make the afternoon such a pleasure. Where had the hour and a half gone? Secret Audience Reporter SS |
Eileen G's Art Workshop
|
What an enjoyable morning at the Art Workshop. A perfect 'wind-down' activity after a very busy year. Nothing too taxing, challenging or competitive - yet it was very interesting, motivating and convivial. Eileen started by showing us some interesting pieces that she had prepared; very simple but effective ideas: many 'cut and paste items, other ideas such as - to enhance/change photocopied prints of plants or pictures with wax, pastels, glue, scissors and stencils available to make the alterations - so many novel notions to remember! |
She had come well prepared with colourful and plentiful resources; there was a multiplicity of different sized , brightly coloured paper, card and pictures, along with trays of pencils, wax-crayons, paints, scissors , glue and water....she'd thought of everything - even the coffee and nibbles.
It wasn't long before we'd selected what we were going to start with and the room stilled with quiet concentration, a flow of gentle laughs and light conversation. There was something there for every one whatever their artistic ability or talent and most felt well satisfied with their achievements of the morning.
It was a brilliant idea and a very welcome earner for the Birkbeck Singers' 2019 Charity 'ActivLives'
What a Star !
Thanks Eileen G.

Closing Meeting for Birkbeck Singers
|
3rd July, the final meeting of the Summer semester 2017-18; only 3 days before our prestigious concert in the Park . The group were well prepared & following a tight schedule to address any issues and practicing the songs; time was tight - never-the- less , the Birkbeck Singers salvaged 10 minutes to thank Chandra, our new MD since last September and Richard , our highly talented piano accompanist , in gratitude for their hard work, good will and patience during the past year and every member contributed towards a gift-voucher and card for each of them . The Singers also felt that they owed a special note of gratitude to Chandra , given that most of the singers had been stunned and traumatised by the sudden death of Be Bird, the previous MD and personal friend of everyone in the choir. Taking-up the post could have been a disaster for Chandra, but No ! She has reinvigorated the choir, brought new ideas and approaches for us along with good humour, sensitivity, skill and musical talent. She’s been a Star ! Thanks Chandra- Enjoy the Flowers. |

Sunday 3rd March 2019
Working out how three sizeable choirs (with conductors Chris Green, Chandra Grover, Alan Loader and accompanists Richard Worman, Steve Browne and Simon Clark) along with soloists and an audience of over 200 friends and colleagues could fit into the church was certainly a logistical challenge - deciding where everyone should sit, stand and sing, adding further meaning to the lovely title of Sunday's concert 'A Musical Hug' at St Andrew's Church, Rushmere, in memory of Be Bird.
On the day the whole performance went very smoothly, the rafters echoing to a rich mix of music and words - including solo performances by the organist (Alan Loader), pianist/singer (Ben Groom), violinist (Steve Browne), sopranos (Brenda Green,Julie Roberts, Margaret Nicholls), poet and narrator (Janet Dunn), and singers from the Trianon Music Group, the Birkbeck Singers and St Andrew's Church Choir. Each choir performed a set; the sets reflected Be's love of many kinds of popular and classical music as well as her faith. We did not quite know what to expect from the combined choirs but the power of our rendition of 'Take my Life and Let it Be' left many singers close to tears. There were many other highlights such as Howard Goodall's'The Lord is My Shepherd' and the final piece 'Just One Person'. We were honouring that one person, Be, who touched all our lives with her dedication, passion and sense of fun. Although we were singing without her, Be was there in every note we sang from the heart. Secret reporter S. W-S |

A happy and significant concert for the Birkbeck Singers in many ways : - a) It fulfilled a promise made to the Park View Home staff, residents and friends to perform a concert for them before the end of the year. A promise made by Be, before her untimely death, and kept by us, the Birkbeck Singers. b) This concert was the debut production for Chandra Grover, our new Musical Director and was such an enjoyable occasion. The first half of familiar light music such as Simple Gifts, Chattanooga Choo Choo etc, and after interval , seasonal songs rang out with 'Jingle Bells', 'Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas' etc. but not before we sang ' All of a Silent Night' by Becki-Slagle-Mayo which the audience felt was 'truly' special ! c)Today was an excellent way to share our Christmas spirit and greetings with the Park View audience who welcomed us and even provided us with tea and delicious cakes. d) and finally It was a memorable gig on which to close 2018 ;- a challenging year in so many ways for the Birkbeck Singers. We now look forward to the opportunities of the coming New Year with more music to enjoy together and share with others. |
Summer Stroll
|
Stevie and Paul volunteered to lead another summer stroll to raise funds for our Birkbeck Singers' Charity ....... in 2018 - it's for ActivLives !
This year they chose a stroll by the beautiful River Deben at Waldringfield and there abouts, starting and finishing at The Maybush. The route was just right; along the sandy river bank, past the colourful sailing craft idling on the river, before turning onto the fields and country lanes beyond. Two or three miles of gentle walking at a relaxed pace, with not a hill nor stile in sight ! -just enjoying the chance to meet up again socially with other Birkbeckers and their partners. Lunch at the Maybush was such a success ........ Just look around the table at the smiley faces and empty plates and glasses. The walk, the weather, the company, the food and the atmosphere were perfect Thanks Stevie and Paul. |

Be Bird Remembered
Monday 25th June 2018
The Birkbeck Singers were stunned to receive the devastating news from the Ipswich Institute that confirmed the rumour that our much loved and respected Be Bird - Music Director , tutor and friend, had died today, as a result of a catastrophic brain hemorrhage.
It was a mind-numbing shock to everyone ; it was so unexpected.
She will be sorely missed in so many ways by everyone who knew her.
May she rest in peace.

Sing-Along!
|
This year's Sing-Along, at 'The Rep', in the heart of Ipswich Town, was a great success and a joy to be there. I had bought a lyrics booklet at the door, so with others in the audience, I could sit around a table with a drink, nibbles and a friend singing along to Tim , his colleagues and his trusty guitar ! The hosts, Mary and Tim, opened the evening with a song, welcomed their guest Julie Stokes (CEO of ActivLives Charity);then before we knew it, the whole audience was taking Tim's lead and singing popular songs, old and new. Next, a well-known local singer/songwriter, Fern Teather, with Sam 'Bongo Boy' Thurlow on ...well...his bongos - took to the stage to perform songs from their recently recorded CDs - and fantastic they were too! After a short break for drinks, the raffle, and a 2 minute talk by Julie on behalf of her charity, 'Silbury Hill' AKA Scott Dolling (flute and guitar) and David Stainer (guitar and mandolin, but not at the same time), played some amazing progressive rock and some true classic music from the 60's and 70's. Far too soon it was time for Tim with his guitar partner and friend Jimmy to close the show. Both guys presented as a brilliant singing two-part duo and guitar team ; maybe we'll hear more from these two, as a pair, at the next 'Sing-Along'. - - And the finale ? 'Hey Jude!' Of course ...sung with great enthusiasm by us all! What a great night out, in a fantastic building, ideal for such an event, with outstanding entertainment that everyone felt part of, led by Tim Laming and the musicians - all true entertainers with hearts of gold - they all played without payment, to raise money for ActivLives. Thank you one and all. Secret reporter from the Audience PJS |

Swing into Christmas
|
Well, our Christmas Concert was a particularly memorable one this year and not just for our performance ! It will be remembered as the year the snow fell and made our journeys so protracted, difficult, and scary!
This was the very first time we staged and hosted our own concert, with lots of hard work :- time given to design beautiful programmes and posters (thanks you Teather Creative Design), organise 3 hampers for raffle prizes with all contributions from the Birkbeckers collated and packaged beautifully by Penny. We had invited The 'Essentially Swing' Band and The 'Sudbury Swing Jivers' to join us. Eventually, after a nervous few hours it became clear that we had enough choir members to be able to sing, nearly all the swing band were there and at the very last the dancers made it from Snowy Essex and Back-up's Kat Espiritu from London . Hooray! What a relief to be able to sing and enjoy some of the wonderful songs from the swing era that were so popular during and just after the Second World War,and of course are still popular today. We sang to a slightly depleted audience but were so pleased they had bravely ventured out - considering the perilous weather conditions. The East of England Co-op had generously donated mince pies, tea and coffee which Penny's family organised and served for everyone to enjoy during the interval. Our guests 'Essentially Swing' were brilliant and looked lovely in their 40's skirts and The Sudbury Jivers group danced their socks off and looked so good in their 40's outfits. The Concert was in aid of Backup, a small charity which gives invaluable aid and support to people who have suffered a spinal cord injury and may no longer be able to walk. Their representative Kat came from London to be with us, really enjoyed the concert and suggested that we might like to perform at one of their future functions in London! We were sponsored by The Ipswich Institute who thought we were all Intrepid! Finally, a big, big thank you to everyone (especially Be, whose vision this was) who worked to make this another successful concert in spite of everything. (Secret reporter - EG) |

St Mary Le Tower Church
|
Sadly Jim Savage died on August 17th so , before the Autumn semester started , the Birkbeck Singers were invited by Jean, his wife, to join in 'Celebrating his Life' at St Mary Le Tower Church along with his Family, friends and colleagues.
|
Few Birkbeck Singers knew that Jim had been the very successful Chief Executive of Ipswich Borough Council (1978-89) - a time of huge change to the town and most members were unaware of his active role in many local branches of National Charities after retirement. In retrospect, Jim enjoyed chatting with everyone about anything, but few would have known of his prowess as a keen amateur sportsman in football, cricket and golf in his earlier days , either.
What all the Singers will remember though, is his lovely deep baritone voice, his quick and gentle wit, and his ready smile. We recognised the family personality-trait of fun and love, as we listened to the anecdotes from his family tributes and those of our Birkbeck spokesperson,Terry: even the back-cover of the memorial-card brought a smile to one's face (see above). |
Birkbeck Summer Stroll
Monday 31st July 2017
Stevie and Paul's 'Stroll Route ' for 2017 started from the opposite direction of last year's very successful Marlesham's walk. The 2.5 miles was taken at a very gentle speed with no stiles to struggle over and, of course, this year, the steps were going downwards. The weather-fairies were perfect and playful , only briefly and surprisingly interrupting the chattering with a water blast from the field irrigation system! Light exercise and lots of nattering was the order of the day which of course, continued over a glass , in the Red Lion. Fun was had by all.
More funds for 'Back up'- Thanks to Stevie and Paul |

An eclectic mix of entertainment followed in the time remaining: ‘ A Suffolk Poem’ from our very own ‘in house ‘poet, Sue. Fresh from success in a local show and armed with her visual aids, Lin sang ‘Knitting’ in a beautiful acapella style. Joan delivered a humorous poem ‘Altos Lament - That perfect swimsuit’ causing some merriment. Then, a quartet of friends sang enthusiastically ‘He’s got the whole world.. and encouraged everyone to join in. Next, acting as a very believable inebriated G.K.Chesterton , David read an extract from the author’s autobiography, Richard played a piano solo and a ‘scratch group’ from within the choir rounded off the event with their current favourite from their latest concert – ‘May It Be’ from Lord of the Rings. All that remains is to say thanks to Be, ( our dedicated yet smiley) Music Director, tutor and problem solver, Richard (our patient accompanist) and Sandy ..the presenter with 'a way with words.' A very successful and enjoyable year Happy summer holidays folks |

Tea-time in the Country in aid of
the Back-up Trust Friday 16th June 2017 |
Lin and John invited the Singers, their partners and friends to a ‘Tea-time in the Country’- and added "donations of cakes would be very welcome".
What a wonderfully relaxed afternoon : the sun in the heavens, birds and breezes in the hedges and the general hum of friends laughing and chattering together. Lin gave a guided walk around her thriving herb and vegetable garden, while John arranged the table and the tea. What a brilliant idea for Back-up. No pressures, no worries …just enjoying the sun, the country garden, the company and indulging in such delicious treats . |

Sing-Along Evening in aid of
the 'Back-up' Trust McGinty's Northgate Street Ipswich Thursday 1st June 2017 |
Starting at 7.30 in the front bar of the pub by the Well, Mary introduced the Evening of Song, with Tim Laming leading in the singing and providing the music with his lively guitar playing and his P.A. system. With a book of lyrics available for a small fee (going towards the ‘Back Up Trust charity), the room, without a chair to spare, sang its heart out to songs like Delilah and Wild Rover. Songs sung without words in the book, came with random, free spirited and raucous voice ‘instrumentals’ and much laughter. A few brave souls performed solos with the audience helping with the chorus and backing vocals and these were very much enjoyed. Fern Teather gave an amazing ‘set' of 5 songs so that Tim could rest his guitar and find a second wind! An absolutely amazing night, raising money for a fantastic charity! Thanks Mary, Tim and Fern – I thoroughly enjoyed it! (Roving reporter from the audience- PJS) |

Music Extravaganza
|
A fantastic occasion for the music groups of the Ipswich Institute – [Strictly Flutes (Director -Trish Goodchild), the Admiral’s Wind Ensemble (Director- Chris Robinson), and the Birkbeck Singers (Director- Be Bird)] to come together to perform, to listen, and to appreciate the huge range of musical talent among the members.
This ‘Extravaganza’ has become an annual musical highlight; it has a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere: perhaps members of the new guitar groups might also come on board for next year’s celebration – when there will probably be coffee, cakes and mini Easter eggs there then, also ! |

At the Ipswich Institute, Elizabeth Murphy from 'Cruse Bereavement Care, Suffolk was delighted to accept a cheque from the Birkbeck Singers who had raised the magnificent amount of £2614.92 during 2016 for this chosen charity. As well as collecting money through concerts with donations from the organisers, the public and choir members themselves, individual singers ran a variety fund raising activities such as a cheese and wine evening, a pop up charity shop, a raffle and country walking event. |

Big Music Night 32
|
The Birkbeck Singers were invited to join the Suffolk Folks' Big Music Night 32 at Henley. This was a different tack for the Singers but they relished the challenge - indeed, it was their 'Set' of four songs that opened the evening's entertainment which was well received and enthusiastically applauded by the audience. The choir, their pianist and music director then merged into the packed hall to enjoy the impressive acts that followed on the stage. As the evening progressed, the listeners were treated to many ballads and songs, accompanied by an interesting variety of instruments which emerged to take their place in the concert... a wooden sound box, a green viol da gamba, zither, saxophone, accordion, flutes and whistles, as well as the skilful playing of guitars and mandolins .... probably the most unlikely instrument employed that evening, was the megaphone! It played an important part in one of the songs and brought surprise and laughter too! What an excellent programme with such a variety of musical styles of singing and instrumentation. A huge thanks to Mike and Linda Green for bringing such a 'choice' and talented group of Suffolk musicians together for this Friday night's memorable entertainment. |

January 2016 -December 2016 ( Charity 'CRUSE) |
|
Christmas certainly arrived at the St Lawrence Centre today. It was a surprise when the Mayor entered and was welcomed to the concert. He, in turn, welcomed all in the audience , before highlighting the excellent charitable work of 'Realise Futures' at St Lawrence Centre, and praising the outstanding fund-raising achievement of the Choir for 'CRUSE' during 2016 . He then handed over to the Birkbeck Singers and Be Bird their musical director.
What a joyous time followed with some beautiful Christmas songs and of course, carols, which we in the audience were encouraged to sing along to.To conclude everyone in the Centre joined hands and sang Auld Lang Syne. An uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable morning for us all |

Beautiful singing with enriching harmonies from the altos and lower sections which rang through the soprano melody which was as sweet as I can remember. The proceedings were led with warmth and inclusiveness which felt just right in the community setting of that lovely place.

Music for an Afternoon in Autumn
|
Following on closely from last Sunday's event, the
Birkbeck Singers gave a slightly shortened, but equally successful) performance of their Autumn concert, to the Mother's Union audience of St Andrew's Church, Rushmere. Report from one of the singer's view point; Our second visit to Rushmere Church for a highly successful concert. To begin, Be skilfully engaged the audience in a rousing chorus of Jerusalem. Throughout, Janet smoothly linked each section of the very varied programme. Penny opened by reading of the amusing poem - 'The Choir'. After our rendition of 'Get Happy', David set the scene ,with part of John Keats poem 'To Autumn' which the Choir followed with Johnny Merser's 'Autumn Leaves' and the nostalgic 'Try to Remember'. Sue led us on into fantasy with her own poem 'Tinkerbelle', next came Richard's atmospheric piano solo 'Forgotten Dreams'. We then entered the WW1 era. A very moving selection of songs and readings. The stirring'Pack up your Troubles' and 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'. The haunting lullaby 'Suo Gan' and Laureen's solo, 'Let there be Peace on Earth', enhanced by Joan's extract from War Horse and Sandy's powerful poem 'Mametz Wood'. We, the Singers, concluded with folk songs,'Early One Morning' and 'O Waly, Waly' , and Be again included the highly appreciative audience in our finale - 'Saints go Marching'. All the readers and the two soloists were extremely professional and in my opinion performed very well. How beautifully it was all presented! Treated to tea and cakes afterwards, the relaxed ambience and excellent performance, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Reporter - ES. |

An enthusiastic response to Ben's offer to support our 2016 charity.Three two hour sessions of absolute fun, and musical mastery proved very lucratve to CRUSE.
Four songs : Hello Mary Lou, Bring Me Sunshine, What a Wonderful World and The Longest Time by Billy Joel.; pleasurable, pacey, nostagic in parts . Generally sung in two voices and even achieved an acappella verse in all four songs by day 3! What a treat. A huge thanks Ben |

Wednesday 5th July - Wednesday - September 2016 Fun activities for our 2016 charity 'CRUSE' Stevie's Walk - 20th July 2016 |
Stevie organised a 2.5 walk along Martlesham Creek in aid of this year's charity, CRUSE. It was a very hot day with temperatures in the high 20's. The circular walk began in the car park of St Mary's Church and took us along fields where the irrigation sprayers looked very tempting, through cooler woods and along a path adjacent to the creek.
There were splendid views of the river, Kyson Point and Woodbridge. The breeze along the river was very welcome, but not as much as the cool beer and sandwiches at the Red Lion pub at the end of the walk. Thanks Stevie for a very enjoyable walk. |

Visiting Belstead Church to sing for the second time the Birbeck Singers, together with Strictly Flutes (also members of the Ipswich Institute) were helping to raise funds towards the upkeep of the Church. The audience were given a really varied and entertaining evening of music and song - from Rogers & Hammerstein to Mozart - something for all. Richard Worman, the accompanist, also played a piano solo . The audience showed their appreciation and were full of praise for the obviously well rehearsed and polished performance. |

Lunchtime Concert
Museum Street Methodist Church Ipswich
Thursday 9th June 2016
Elegantly dressed in black and lilac, the Birkbeck Singers made a welcoming impression from the start.
Two gospel songs opened the concert and a bright and varied programme of Scottish, American, Welsh and English folksongs followed in quick succession; some brought a smile to many faces, whilst the harmonies of a gentle lullaby brought me close to tears. In mid-programme, Richard Worman, their new accompanist, gave a solo performance of the beautiful melody ' Forgotten Dreams' by LeRoy Anderson, to the very appreciative audience. When Be Bird, the Music Director, turned her attention to the audience, some at first felt shy, but, within minutes the rafters were ringing with 'Jerusalem', sung with feeling by all who were present. It was a grand occasion. Thank you , Birkbeck Singers. Roving Reporter B L |
Handel's Messiah
Saturday 12th March 2016
|
Members of the Birkbeck Singers and other local choral groups, were invited to rehearse and perform Handel's Messiah with the Ipswich Choral Society. About a dozen of us responded. After the first rehearsal many of us felt somewhat overwhelmed. As the twelve weeks before the performance progressed, under the musical direction of Robin Walker, it was incredibly taxing and demanding but also very satisfying and enjoyable. We pushed on using every resource we could find ( you tube, CDs, Choraline etc)spending many hours at home practising and not wishing to fall behind. The regular members were also pressure, of course, but took time out to support and encourage us.
Final Rehearsal ! We assembled in the CornExchange together with the Kingfisher Sinfonetta; this was also a first for most of us. What an evening. For the actual performance we numbered approximating 100 and the public almost 5 times as many. So much excitement; we had a most appreciative audience and a standing ovation for our rendering of the Hallelujah Chorus. We were on a high for days afterwards. ES Roving Reporter |

Saying Good Bye to Ben
Wednesday 19th January 2016
Wednesday 19th January 2016
We knew it would come one day. Well, last Wednesday it did. We had to say farewell to Ben Groom the accompanist, who has been with our choir for the last four years; encouraging us, laughing with us, and with Be, improving our singing week by week.
A wonderfully gifted musician, he was able to teach us so much whilst being aware of our failings! I think he knew the mistakes we were going to make before we'd even made them! Now he's off to spread his wings in London and all our good wishes for a happy and successful life go with him.
There was much singing and gift giving, speeches and heartfelt thanks from Sandy and Be and all of us there. And as Be said in her farewell speech, " As you move along the musical bannister of life, may all the splinters be facing the right way!"
We'll miss you Ben.

Coffee & Carols Concert
|
Our St Lawrence Christmas Concert was very well received. We opened with eight of our favourite numbers from our concert repertoire of the past year - 2015. Then we moved onto familiar seasonal songs and carols which the audience enthusiastically joined in. The ' Strictly Flutes' Group , along with Ben Groom on the piano , 3 or 4 purloined sets of children's bells, and the whole audience accompanied the Birkbeck Singers whilst we sang 'Jingle Bells '. What a great Christmas sound! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Everyone ! After the concert, most of the Birkbeck Singers celebrated with a fabulous Christmas buffet luncheon and more more singing.! |
We were pleased to welcome members of the Institute's 'Strictly Flutes' Group and the 'New Wind Ensemble' to join us singers in the Birkbeck Room for an informal In-House Concert. . 70 performers (with instruments, mince pies and other goodies) but no audience. It was a tight fit but good fun.

Belstead ChurchDate Wednesday 14 October 2015
This evening was arranged to help raise funds for St. Mary's Church , Belstead. It was worth it ; the rain, the mud and the darkness, to sing in this lovely little Suffolk church. The acoustics inside were a joy and complemented both the choir's and soloists' voices brilliantly, whilst the cosy atmosphere by candle light for part of the time, fitted in with a very varied programme . The Birkbeck Singers and the audience, enjoyed the wine and nibbles provided by our hosts and many took the opportunity to say how much they had enjoyed the evening.
